The idea of a movie for WICKED was an ongoing fantasy of many of fans like me. Now, after Universal Studios purchased the rights last year, we have the name of whom will be directing such magnificent project: Stephen Daldry, who has most notably directed The Reader, The Hours, and Billy Elliot (which he recently stage directed for Broadway).
“Wicked” the smashing-hit musical may be on its way to becoming a feature film. This has captivated several high-profile directors.
Although the project is in its very early stages of development, “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy and “Star Trek” and “Alias” helmer J.J. Abrams have already expressed interest. So have Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Nine”) and James Mangold (“Knight and Day,” “Walk the Line”), according to Deadline.com.
The hit Broadway musical is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz, ” telling the tale of Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West based on a novel by Gregory Maguire. The musical opened on Broadway in 2003 and was a huge success. Idina Menzel won a Tony in 2004 for playing Elphaba, and Kristin Chenoweth was nominated for her role as Glinda.
The musical has been touring with two National Tours around the country for the last several years, and the next step is a movie adaptation. Marc Platt, who produced the musical, will do the same for the film adaptation. The musical’s book writer, Winnie Holzman (“My So-Called Life”) and songwriter, Stephen Schwartz, are also involved in the development.
November 13th will be the release date of the movie “2012”. Directed by Roland Emmerich, from Independence Day and The Day after Tomorrow, this movie portays a Mayan belief that the Doom Day will be December 21st 2012. Here is the Trailer:
